Measurement UnitScaredy Squirrel started the unit with the measurement of time. As a class we began standard measurement units with a variety of tools. They noticed number patterns on rulers, used them as tools and made some more foldables for their notebooks!

Student's Personal Daily School Schedule
|
Scaredy Squirrel has many fears so has a daily schedule to prevent the unknown from happening. Then he jumps into the unknown with a funny outcome.. a new schedule! The students calculated elapsed time between Squirrel's old and new schedule.
Scaredy Squirrel had a survival kit to survive the unknown. The students made one for themselves if they were unexpectantly in an unknown forest.C.O.J.L. |

Winter Triangle Tree Geometry Project
Combining Art & Math
This was a multi step & multi day math project that integrated art and geometry. ( Gallons of glue, patience & humor were also required. ) The children covered a piece of paper with overlapping tissue paper ( Can you imagine boys, paint brushes, thin tissue paper and cups of glue? if so you understand why humor on my part was a crucial.) They also used water colors & painted a blank winter scene for their final winter scene. Once everything was dried, using the straight side of their protractors, the children drew 4 different triangles on the back of their tissue paper. They were then asked to cut them out & measure each angle after a mini lesson ( review for most) about the properties of triangles & how to use a protractor. Some figured out that they only needed to measure 2 angles to get the 3rd !! They also were required to fill out their math recording form as they went along completing their scene. This was a lot of hard work but they came out so pretty. The students learned about the angles of triangles and how to use a protractor and so much more!

Turkey Feather Math
|
The children will begin this unit of study with different types of data organized for them. Using a variety of graphing tools the children will begin collecting , organizing and analyzing data that has some relevance to them.

Integrating Monsters, Writing and Math Word Problems!
A Project
The children were asked to notice specific attributes of their monsters & describe them. They were then assigned mathematical operations and asked to write their own word problem using key words. These problems were then used to make a Popplet and Puppet Pal movie. This required numerous sequential steps to complete. Many did a very good job using a variety of character voices, perspective taking and elaborating on their math story. Enjoy.

A Strategy for Solving Math Word Problems.
CUBES
Solving math word problems with CUBES, a keyword Foldable and pulling it all together with a Popplet! The CUBES form is in the homework section if needed.
When the 5th graders returned they went to Edmodo and watched the 3-4th grader's SMART movie ( below). Everyone had to answer a very hard question about the poem.
Smart by Shel Silverstein
While the 5th graders are at Camp the 3rd-4th graders made a video and a doodle cast
about the poem Smart.
Enjoy.

Place value , a math glyph and a hero.
We start our place value unit with a bit of review and a song - Zero the Hero by School House Rock. As we begin our place value unit & review the 5th graders will be off to camp. So, in the spirit of this mighty hero we all made a hero math glyph to review some basic graphing and data analysis with the 5th graders when they return.
A math glyph is a visual representation of data than can be graphed and analyzed.

Math problem solving & weekly word problems in our math groups has started!
This can be challenging for many. So, we start this year long work with a fun CUBES foldable, a CUBES video and our math notebooks. Understanding the importance of math keywords and using the CUBES strategy helps our students solve word problems. Coming soon for homework! |

Basic Money Skills Review
To start our year long economy system & store we begin the year working on our money skills. The children were asked to make a dollar 4 different ways. They were to make one with the fewest coins, one with the most coins ( using 100 pennies was optional) and two other different ways. They were then to take 4 pictures of their 4 ways and make a Popplet with these pictures. |
